Ellie Reid about her work:
I am interested in the nature of materials: their abilities, and their vulnerabilities. I am examining the strengths, fragilities, beauty and the tensions that exist in combining materials. Through processes I hope to learn and express something of our own human condition and the way in which we relate to both each other and the matter that surrounds us.
The materials I use go through stages of construction and deconstruction. At a given time a pause in the action of making is agreed upon or determined, and a frame in which to view the activity and its outcome is adopted.
The marks, materials, and forms that make up the sculptural vestiges of the activities are often reworked and given new context and meaning in future projects. This way of working reflects the natural state of all things: one of flux. This line of research questions what was once considered to be a fundamental principle of sculpture: that matter can be fixed.
