New plant species found in empty garden shop

Art and garden lovers can now find something surprising in the empty garden shop in 33 – 35 George Street:  exciting unusual plants by Taiwanese artist Ping-Yeh Li. He invented plants, and to convince all sceptics built “nature-like” models and painted detailed dissections. They all look stunningly beautiful… as if they were real.

Installation of an autumn inspired environment of wheelbarrow, autumn leaves, shovels give the impression as if the gardener just has left the scene. Installation helped by Kay Sentance, Artist and theatre prop-maker living in Oxford,

This installation will be in the Garden Shop, George Street until the 7th of November 2009.

The work is shown by the art gallery Notfamousyet. This event is part of the City Council’s empty shop initiative

Oxford City Council would like to continue to support and promote projects in Oxford and co-ordinate/broker relationships between landlords/agents and artist/community groups to enable our empty shops to become occupied, albeit on a temporary basis and therefore not only solve the problem of an increasingly shabby-looking high street but to highlight Oxford’s creative talent and present community activity.

All projects rely on the willingness of landlords and agents to open their doors to local artists and communities. Therefore we are looking for interested landlords/agents to come to us in the first instance, in order to be paired up with the most appropriate artists/projects for their units, if they are interested in hosting a community/art-led project in their unit for a temporary period. All units are handed over on the understanding that if a commercial tenant is found, the shop will have to be vacated quickly and efficiently. All insurances are covered by the artists/projects. Arrangements and negotiation is held regarding use of utilities and any token rent; this is at the discretion of the landlord.
