The Workshop Studio
A glimpse in an artist run studio at the Link Gallery
05 April 2011 to 2 July 2011, The Link Gallery, John Radcliffe Hospital
The new exhibition at the Link Gallery (John Radcliffe Hospital) will give a glimpse in an artist run studio „The Workshop Studios,“ based in East Oxford.
The Workshop Studios is an an artist led space dedicated to supporting professional artists by providing studio spaces. It also invites the public to a range of events including artists’ talks, informal exhibitions, film nights and it runs a range of short art courses.
The show will feature photos of the different studios in the old back house, capturing the artistic atmosphere of the environment. The photos also show the different working techniques and processes of the of the six artists producing paintings, installations and sculptures. Each one of the artists – Jan Crombie, Alicia Tennant, Sally Dod, George O'Shaughnessy, Jane Wafer, Jennifer Brown – will use the gallery space to present one latest piece of art work.
Jan Crombie, the head of the studio, is a successful artist who has had solo shows in the UK as well as abroad. Jan will present paintings from her large installation which depict warrior/conjuror characters, that are a continuing part of the evolving narrative of The Tower Tribe.
Alicia Tennant graduated last year at the University of Brighton. She describes her work as 'a constant state of flux between painting in a representative nature and approaching a more abstract perspective'.
Sally Dod, a young artist who studied at the University College Falmouth, creates intriguing landscape paintings of industrial buildings. The paintings are devoid of people and giving them a stark, even impersonal quality.
George O'Shaughnessy works have a strong placative style and an either expressive or hidden political context.
Jane Wafer studied biology before turning to art as an alternative way to engage with the world. The sculptural work that she is presenting follows a numeric sequence „knitting to numbers“.
Jennifer Brown explores the interrelationship between ourselves and the architectural structure of our environment she seeks to address the theatrics of the everyday.
